Kordell Hicks B blokta doğdu, B blokta büyüdü.  Çocukluğu Crystal Gardens’ın dar koridorlarında geçti. Annesi gece vardiyasında çalışan bir hastane temizlik görevlisiydi. Babası ise hayatında uzun süre kalmamış bir isimdi. Kordell için aile kan bağıyla sınırlı değildi; sokakta kurduğu bağlar onun ailesiydi. On sekiz yaşına yeni bastı. Çocuklukla yetişkinlik arasındaki çizgide değil, doğrudan sert tarafında durdu. Sabretmeyi küçük yaşta bıraktı. B blok ona iki şey öğretti: geri adım atmamak ve dostunu yarı yolda bırakmamak. Bu kurallar onun için tartışmaya açık değildi. Kordell düşüncesiz değildi, ama duygusunu mantığının önüne koydu. Bir arkadaşına yanlış yapıldığında sonucu hesaplamadı. Tepki verdi. Bu yüzden çevresinde güvenilir olarak bilindi; aynı zamanda tehlikeli olarak görüldü. Çünkü onun sadakati sınır tanımadı. Fiziksel olarak atletikti. Enerjisi yüksekti. Sokakta nasıl duracağını biliyordu. Göz temasından kaçmadı. Lafını dolandırmadı. Bu tavır bazılarına saygı verdi, bazılarına tehdit gibi geldi. B blokta büyüdüğü için mahalle içi dengeleri bildi. Ama her zaman o dengeyi korumadı. İçinde bastırılmış bir öfke vardı. Çocukken yaşadığı eksiklikleri zayıflık olarak gördü ve bir daha zayıf görünmemek için sert bir kabuk oluşturdu.

Ekonomik imkânları sınırlıydı. Liseden yeni çıktı Yarı zamanlı işlerde çalıştı ama düzenli bir plan kurmadı. Asıl meselesi saygıydı. İnsanların gözünde hafife alınmamak istiyordu. Dostları için riske girdi. Kavga çıkacaksa geri çekilmedi ama bu cesaretin altında güçlü bir aidiyet ihtiyacı vardı. B blok onun kimliğiydi. Orada büyüdü, orada şekillendi. Oradan kopmak gibi bir düşüncesi yoktu; aksine orayı sahiplenme duygusu ağır bastı.

Kordell lider değildi, ama liderlik potansiyeli taşıdı. Henüz yönü netleşmemiş bir güçtü. Yanlış yönlendirilirse hızla düşebilirdi. Doğru disiplinle şekillenirse ağır bir karaktere dönüşebilirdi. Onu tehlikeli yapan şey kontrolsüzlüğü değil, sadakatinin ölçüsüzlüğüydü.
